Evaluate airline miles and credit card loyalty points

For any airline rewards program the deceased used, contact their customer service line to discuss the account.

In general, these accounts should be closed to prevent fraud or misuse.

Individual airlines retain the right to decide whether or not to transfer accumulated miles to an heir.

When contacting the airlines about these programs, ask:

  • How many unused miles the deceased had at their time of their passing
  • Whether the deceased had any cashback
  • Whether there are any loyalty points that can be cashed out
  • Whether the account is tied to a credit card or other program with annual fees
