Writing and finding himself in the field of memoir, life review, death and grief for as long as he can remember, Garrett Drew Ellis established himself as a professional writer in 2005 and as an End of Life Doula in 2019. That same year, Garrett founded Beyond Morning, offering end of life doula, memoir writing and Legacy services for the terminally ill and aged. He received training from INELDA (The International End of Life Doula Association) in 2019 and became one of their educators soon thereafter. Garrett is the owner, principal writer and EOL Doula at Beyond Morning LLC. He teaches as a trainer and facilitator with INELDA where he is also a Contributing Editor to its newsletter. As a ghostwriter, he has written over 30 memoirs on behalf of others, including stories of trauma, resilience, faith and other topics. He offers private duty nursing care as a Certified Nursing Assistant in the state of Pennsylvania. Garrett is a Study Circle facilitator with the Institute of Birth, Breath and Death and the author of “Write Until You Feel Better” and the forthcoming “Before It’s too Late”. Garrett lives and works in Central Pennsylvania with his wife and 4 children and enjoys reading epic novels and memoirs.

Beyond Morning is a death-support and storytelling organization that exists to help individuals remember, record, share, and celebrate their life’s story before the moment of death arrives. Then, when death is imminent, we offer compassionate care and support through the end of life doula model. We teach individuals about the value of legacy and memoir and life stories, as well as the necessity of memorializing all of those things when they are no longer here to do so. Our mission is simple: We are scribes, storytellers, and listening ears for both the living and the dying. For the dying, we are companions, friends, caregivers, and end of life support.

What types of services do you provide?

We accomplish our goals and mission in a number of ways and offer the following services: Through our Story Studio, we write, record, share and celebrate memoirs for both the living and the terminally ill. We also create content (books, podcasts and more) on the topics of legacy and grief. Through our End of Life Services, we offer death doula support, including bedside vigils, advance planning, funeral & end of life planning, companionship, grief support, and more. For organizations and other death doulas, we offer training, media support, and more in order to encourage death-healthy conversation.

What should clients know about your pricing(e.g., discounts, fees, packages)?

We are committed to accessibility. Our desire is that all people would be able to utilize our services. We do not allow financial restraints, disabilities, racial disparities or lack of technological resources to limit access to our services. Through payment arrangements, sliding scales, clear pricing and person centered services, we examine each unique situation on a case by case basis and will formulate a plan of action unique to every situation. If you need help affording or accessing any of the services we provide, contact us so that we can be of assistance.

What is your typical process for working with a new client?

The first step in figuring out how Beyond Morning can help you is to schedule a "Connection Call". During this free 30 minute call, you will discuss your needs and I will share how I might be able to help. From there, we develop a quote and a clear and simple contract. After that, we begin services.

What are some of the ways you have supported someone at end-of-life?

I focus on creating legacy memoirs and writing life stories for the terminally ill. I have also supported these same individuals, as well as others, through hands on care and other doula services. My website gives a good overview of all that I can provide.

What advice would you give someone looking to hire an end-of-life doula?

I would suggest that they share openly about what they need in a conversation before service begins. Talk to the doula about what the possibilities for service are and be open about what you believe you need. In addition, allow room for the doula to present services that you may not have considered.

What questions should clients think through before talking to doulas?

They should think through whether or not they are ready to let a third party, non biased person into a very vulnerable time in their life. If this is affirmative, a doula can be a very valuable asset.

What populations are you best suited to serve?

I am best suited to serve those of middle age with aging parents, or individuals who desire to consider their mortality and the ways in which they want to create a legacy. I am also suited to serve grieving children and teenagers.

Do you offer any physical modalities or specialty training?

Outside of the legacy memoir work ( culminating in a written memoir with possible publication), I am also a trained and certified nursing assistant in the state of Pennsylvania. I am equipped to provide assistance with the activities of daily living (toileting, dressing, feeding, physical care, etc). I am also a notary public in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Do you offer any other services beyond end-of-life doula support (e.g. advanced care planning, paralegal, legacy services, chaplaincy services)?

I offer legacy services, adolescent and childhood grief processing and notary services. Notary services are limited to the state of Pennsylvania.

Do you work as part of a collaborative or independently?

I work independently.

Are you willing to work remotely?

Yes, I work remotely as well as in person.
