As a young adult, I suffered from anxiety and depression, hormonal imbalances and cancer. I was born to older parents; my mom was 40 and my dad was 60 when I was born. In my early 20s, both of my parents got sick at the same time, and I watched conventional medicine fail them. My mother had two different types of cancer, which didn’t respond to either chemo or radiation and she died within a year. My dad had Alzheimer’s and spent many years in a care home until he died. Just after my mom died, I was diagnosed with stage III cervical cancer (I was 23). After witnessing my mother go through medical treatments with awful side effects, I refused to have chemo and radiation, and chose to have surgery instead. I started researching herbs and nutrition. I began juicing, fasting, using herbs and turned to natural therapies. I fully recovered and the cancer has never come back. My first career was in the oil and gas industry as a computer programmer, which I hated. When I began developing some other health issues in my early 30s, I found a local Naturopathic Doctor. I didn’t know that that type of work existed, and I was inspired to go back to school and study Naturopathy. Eventually, I worked for over eight years in a clinic, before running my own private practice for eight years. Although my career in naturopathic medicine has been extremely rewarding, I have seen too many family members, friends and clients suffer needlessly as they approach the end of life. I feel called to support and comfort others as they approach their transition, and will do this work as an End of Life Doula. I believe the transition into death is a very sacred time and consider it an honor to be present with those that are passing. I’ve been around death a lot in my life. I’ve watched my parents, friends, and sadly some of my naturopathic clients die over the years. As much as we want to deny it, run from it and not talk about it, we are all going to die someday. My philosophy on this subject is simple – death and dying doesn’t have to be scary or painful. We need to have conversations about it and be prepared so that we make the transition without pain and fear. It is work that I’m passionate about – I strongly believe that every human being deserves dignity, respect, care and comfort during this transitional time. With proper patient advocacy and end of life doula services, my mission is to serve people who are dying. To help terminally ill people (and their families) to prepare for death in a comfortable and peaceful way.

Melissa was such an immense helping during the last few months of my wife’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis. She was able to stay with my wife when I had to run errands and she had a great way of keeping my wife calm when she would become agitated. I’m so glad that she was there… she helped prepared me for my wife’s death with a very calm presence. If you have a loved one who is terminal, I can’t recommend her services enough. She has a very calm and patient presence. She’s able to bring a soothing energy to an otherwise chaotic situation and was able to help both of us. I highly recommend her.

I can’t speak highly enough of Melissa Wood and her dedication to her clients. A friend of mine had relocated to San Antonio to be near her sister as her health declined drastically. However, her sister had no experience with finding proper care for someone so ill, and my friend asked me for help. I found Melissa’s contact information in the National End-of-Life Doula Alliance directory, and she responded to my call quickly. Melissa helped my friend get set up for hospice care and found a new health care facility that could provide my friend with the appropriate care during her last days. She was a relentless advocate for my friend, constantly following up with hospice and the health care facilities to make sure my friend’s needs and wishes were addressed. My friend’s condition had impacted her memory, and Melissa calmly answered her questions, no matter how many times my friend asked the same question. My friend told me several times how happy she was with all of Melissa’s efforts. Melissa also helped explain the dying process to my friend’s sister and me and clearly answered all of our questions too. When my friend was in the very final stages of her life, Melissa even spent a night watching over her, so that her sister could get some well-needed rest. All of Melissa’s efforts resulted in my friend being able to pass comfortably and peacefully. Melissa far exceeded my expectations with this process, and I highly recommend her to anyone needing assistance with death.
What types of services do you provide?
Patient Advocacy -- Aiding patients to organize their medical papers and prioritizing their needs by preparing questions for physician appointments, including attending at the patient’s request and taking notes. Conversation Facilitation -- Connecting family members for challenging discussions and providing guidance as an informed, experienced, and compassionate third party. Emotional Support & Companionship -- Providing the patient with the calming properties of meditation and music and reading books, including religious/spiritual materials, aloud to the patient. Holistic Support & Comfort Care -- This includes soothing touch therapy massage, Reiki, and flower remedies that can be relaxing and nurturing for the patient (and their family). End of Life Transition Planning -- Helping to create a death plan and organize home vigils and a living funeral if desired, as well as discussing the legacy that the patient hopes to leave with family; this could be a scrapbook, a photobook memorial journal, photo albums, letters to family members, written words and thoughts of the patient. Vigil -- In the active stages of dying, holding vigil.
What should clients know about your pricing(e.g., discounts, fees, packages)?
Initial Consultations are always free. Sliding scale available for those who need it.
What is your typical process for working with a new client?
My initial consultation is done to see what exactly the patient (or their family) are needing. Sometimes, it's not even the patient that needs support...but instead a close friend or family member. So the initial consultation is done to find out what needs are there and how I best can serve and help. Once the initial needs are addressed, then we discuss how I can best help..what my gifts are that could benefit those involved. I consider it a privilege to help those approaching the end of life and will always fine-tune my offerings with what is in the best interest of the patient and family.
What are some of the ways you have supported someone at end-of-life?
-Have helped obtain hospice support -Have located a personal care home to support the patient at the end of life -Support of VSED (Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking) and all that entails -Referring family to a trusted lawyer for help with banking/financial information -Holistic support; reiki energy; massage therapy; bach flower remedies for emotional and spiritual support -Breath work and meditation -Overnight vigil work in the active dying phase
What advice would you give someone looking to hire an end-of-life doula?
It's important to feel like you have a good fit with your Doula. Making sure that person can identify and help you to identify what your needs are and then ensuring they have the skills to be able to help in those areas.
What questions should clients think through before talking to doulas?
Do they have a very clear understanding of the medical side of what is going on with the patient? Oftentimes, neither the patient or the family truly understand what is happening...sometimes the medical world is neglectful in being 100% completely forthcoming with the status of the patient. As a Patient Advocate, I can jump in and find out exactly what is going on. Does the patient/family have an end of life death plan? Are the finances and estate in order with an attorney? Does the patient want a legacy project to be done on their behalf? Do they want to write letters (or have the doula write letters) to their loved ones? Do they want someone with them during the active dying phase or would they prefer to be alone? What about after death? Have funeral/cremation services been planned?
What populations are you best suited to serve?
I prefer to work with adults. As a member of the LGBT population, I am happy to serve.
Do you offer any physical modalities or specialty training?

Do you offer any other services beyond end-of-life doula support (e.g. advanced care planning, paralegal, legacy services, chaplaincy services)?
A person does NOT have to be at the end of life to work with me. Death curious, death afraid, unsure about how to approach illness, etc....those are all welcome.
Do you work as part of a collaborative or independently?
Independently
Are you willing to work remotely?
