What advice would you give someone looking to hire an end-of-life doula?
You get NO practice/trial runs at death. Find a doula that is agreeable to your wishes, you do this ONE time. This is your time whether you are planning your end of life journey, travelling it, or accompanying someone that is.
What questions should clients think through before talking to doulas?
Can I be honest? A Doula is your support and to be effective, you must be honest and respectful about your needs and wishes.
What services do I KNOW I want? Be open to other service needs that may arise for you, and be ready to ask for them. In the beginning of this process, be bold and confident in what your needs are and do not negotiate, this is your time.
How much time am I willing to give and how much time will in need from my Doula? Be aware that different Doulas provide different services and be open about what you expect and need as well as what you are willing to give. For instance, if you have a detailed ritual in mind for your vigil or after death, be prepared to give the details and answer questions as they arise. Stay the course, it is yours.
Will I allow or invite family or friends to know or share in my process? Whether you will or will not, be very clear with your Doula about what is to be shared or kept with regard to family and friends. This is to be honored and you should expect nothing less.
What populations are you best suited to serve?
I am honored to serve a diverse population.
I support VSED, MAiD, Death with Dignity seekers.
Do you offer any other services beyond end-of-life doula support (e.g. advanced care planning, paralegal, legacy services, chaplaincy services)?
I offer support in all aspects of EOL planning including advanced care plans and ritual planning.
Are you willing to work remotely?
I am willing to work remotely and prefer the personal touch of in person contacts.
