What is your typical process for working with a new client?

Accepted Answer

First, I offer a free 30-minute consultation. There's no point in someone spending their money if we are just not suited for one another, right? This will allow us to feel each other out and see if my services fit their needs. If we move forward, we'll set up the meeting, I'll send their contract, and they'll send payment. Meetings can be either in person or via Zoom. The first meeting is typically two hours. This is where we get down to the nitty-gritty of moving forward.
For doula services, I meet with the main caregiver and the patient. Hopefully, if it's doula services, the person is still fairly well and we have time to establish a relationship, but I'm of service whenever I'm called. We'll schedule the rest of our meetings from there and address any issues we've found during the first meeting.
For planning services, I meet with the person involved. We get straight to the point of planning, but we meet several times so you have time to think about what you want. I don't want to rush you in any decisions here. This is your health or your legacy we're talking about, not mine. You'll end up with everything neatly laid out and ready to take to a notary. (I do not notarize to avoid any appearance of impropriety, though it wouldn't be illegal.)

What advice would you give someone looking to hire an end-of-life doula?

A doula is not a caregiver. We aren't there to help you provide physical care. We're your guide or a coach. We will help you get through the ups and downs to make certain you don't fall through the cracks in hospice care. Doulas also aren't medical personnel. Your doula should not give you any medical advice or try to do any sort of diagnostics. Some doulas used to be nurses, but now they're doulas! Giving medical advice is outside a doula's scope of practice. 
We will provide you with guidance and support. We will hold space for you and your loved ones. We will be the calm in the storm of your heartache and loss. We can be there for you emotionally, spiritually, and physically from the terminal diagnosis through bereavement.

What populations are you best suited to serve?

I think I can help anyone, however, I'm probably best suited for people who want a straight talker. I'm not someone who is going to beat around the bush. I tend to tell it how it is.

Do you offer any other services beyond end-of-life doula support?

Accepted Answer

Of course! I offer advanced care planning and legacy planning. There is so much we can take care of well ahead of time. There is no reason to put anything off until someone is ill. Lack of planning ends up costing people money and causing undue stress.

Do you work as part of a collaborative or independently?

I'm independent. However, I have been trained with a lovely group of people and know a few in the area and some who work remotely who may be able to assist if I'm not the person for you. Also, my training organization has trained thousands of highly skilled men and women. I can always reach the school, so there's no reason we can't find you a doula!
